A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Brisas del Jardin and San Jose de la Cima II neighborhoods of Comuna 3 Manrique in Medellin, were founded approximately 30 years ago. All the land belonged to a priest named Luis Fernando Velez, who kindly decided to donate the land to poor families to build their houses, most of whom were forced to come to the city because illegal armed groups forced them to leave their territories.
Where do families come from?
The houses were initially built with improvised materials such as plastic and wood, and little by little they have been improving them with clay bricks and cement. Currently, these neighborhoods are 85% Afro-Colombian, 10% indigenous, and 5% Venezuelan and low-income families from all over the country.
How is the economy?
The economy is based mainly on informal jobs, with some men working in the construction sector and some women working as domestic employees and in manufacturing companies. There are many social problems in these neighborhoods, but the main one is the lack of jobs, which prevents many families from covering their basic needs for food, health, and education.
What is “Macromural Constellations”?
Due to the above, the government and the community worked together. They inaugurated in May 2023, the “Macromural Constellations”, an artistic project that has more than 1.000 painted houses and 30 big murals, that aims to boost these neighborhoods as a tourist and cultural destination, to boost the economy of families so that foreigners who visit us, can have an authentic experience, to know not only a beautiful place but also interact with a community that wants to improve their living conditions.
Come to support this community!
If you take a tour to Manrique, you will not only have an unforgettable experience because you will get to know the real Medellin, but you will also help a community to have economic income and therefore, improve their quality of life.
